Designed 1952 as a deep-sea fish ship the Roald Amundsen was built and equipped to service the military fleet of East Germany. The brig was retired after the fall of the Berlin Wall and was discovered by enthusiasts in Wolgast in 1992. She was restored with the idea of becoming a sail training ship. Roald Amundsen is run and up kept by a German not-for-profit organization and sails the waters of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea but also visits the Canary Islands, Bay of Biscay and the Mediterranean in winter months. This ship is one of two non-American based ships in the fleet sailing the Great Lakes this year.
